Installing Your Lake Dock: What to Expect
We won’t mince our words on this: installing a lake dock can be a complicated and labor-intensive process. That said, it’s also an exceptionally rewarding one. There are few better ways to spend a summer in Michigan than on the water.
In this month’s blog post, we’re discussing DIY lake dock installation and when to call in the professionals.
Tips for Installing a Lake Dock at Home
As seasons dock builders, we’ve learned quite a bit about the dos and don’ts of lake dock installation. Below, we’re detailing some of the most important ones to keep in mind as you install your dock at home.
Install as much as possible on dry land. This one seems obvious, but you’d be surprised at what you might miss if you’re not careful. One of the most common (yet most avoidable) issues for first-time dock installers to run into is losing essential parts in the lake. While you’re not likely to lose a whole segment of your dock, parts such as brackets, washers, bolts, and foot pads can get washed away if you’re not paying attention. To prevent this, we recommend installing as many parts as is practical in advance.
Choose the right spot. You don’t want to have your dock halfway installed just to realize that there’s a tree trunk, rock, or drop off in the water. Make sure to scope out your ideal place for the dock first to prevent any unforeseen obstacles.
Get some help. Even if you’re not working with hired hands, getting a few friends along to help will make a world of difference. After all, everyone wants a friend with a lake dock!
Should You Call Professional Dock Builders?
While this is certainly a personal choice, there are some signs that may indicate that hiring dock builders is best. Let’s take a brief look at what those signs are:

You don’t want the hassle. If you don’t want the hassle of building or installing a dock, but you still want a dock, then it’s time to hire help. If installing your dock sounds like a headache now, then just imagine how you’ll feel when your waist-high in water and the waves just took your last screw.
